Zero Waste Project

OngoingLocal initiative lead

Our local initiative in Erdemli uses the association's own resources to reduce waste in food production and make use of surplus products.

About the project

The Zero Waste Project is a local initiative in Erdemli to reduce waste and value the effort behind local produce. Together with local people, we develop practical ways to make use of surplus products.

We carry out this work using our association’s own resources and local cooperation. By bringing traditional production knowledge together with a zero waste approach, we aim to value producers’ work and contribute to the protection of natural resources.

Project objectives

  • Reduce waste in local production and support the use of surplus products.
  • Preserve traditional production knowledge while finding new uses for local products.
  • Build awareness of zero waste through practical initiatives developed with local people.

Activities within the project

Turning surplus grape molasses into vinegar in Şahna is one practical example of the project. Molasses made from locally grown grapes and left unsold was converted into vinegar through traditional fermentation.

This activity began with the idea of valuing both the local product and the work that went into making it. Turning the molasses into a different product brought waste prevention together with the preservation of traditional production knowledge.

NATURELDER’s role

Mediterranean Natural Life Association carries out the initiative with local people, using its own resources. We approach local production needs from a zero waste perspective and develop cooperation to make use of surplus products.

Who is it for?

The project is for producers in Erdemli, people working with local products and community members who want to help reduce food waste.
